The National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) is fearful that some employees of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) are working under dangerous conditions and nothing is being done to rectify the situation.Despite several deaths and injuries due to GPL employees being shocked, receiving burns and falling off electricity poles over the years, NAACIE head Kenneth Joseph said calls for safer work conditions are falling on deaf ears, while requests to address the matter, “Can’t seem to get past certain levels.”NAACIE head Kenneth JosephWhat seemed even more stressful to the union head was the poor attention given to the incident when it occurs, and the lack of investigations into an employee’s death or injury.Joseph told media operatives last week that this issue is a growing one at GPL and it is becoming a major burden for the union since they are seemingly unable to get through to the GPL hierarchy. After relating two recent work-related deaths and one injury,Cheap Shoes Uk http://www.wholesaleukshoes.com/, Joseph said relatives of those persons are still to receive compensation from the state owned electricity agency. He however said that GPL was warned a long time ago that people were being endangered. “We told the company since 2009 that they are putting peoples’ lives at risk.”He said it is unthinkable to allow people to lose their lives, “because you want to pay less.”He said, “I don’t know how the Ministry that is concerned with GPL can allow, without investigation, the incidents occurring.”Joseph said that not only are the gear or tools an issue but the attention being placed on safety precautions and other vital areas is lacking. He however noted that issues of safety are something that top brass officials should be paying keen attention to.Added to this, Joseph had also called for massive investigations into GPL and its functioning before any more budgeted funds are pumped into the company. Matters of safety were one of the areas which he said need to be investigated, while touching also on the hiring and management process. It was reported that in 2012 at Victoria, a GPL worker was burnt while working on an electricity pole. Joseph said the man is still in a wheelchair awaiting compensation. In Berbice a young man also died after falling from a pole and on February last, another was badly burnt at West Coast Berbice.

Presidential Adviser on Governance Gail Teixeira yesterday during an interview with the National Communications Network said that President Donald Ramotar has issued an apology to Opposition Leader Mr. David Granger.President Donald RamotarThis followed the decision by members of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), to walk out of a meeting convened to discuss the amendments to the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Bill. The opposition left the meeting after they were instructed not to take part in any further discussions by APNU’s leader. This was as a result of a perceived slight by the Opposition over a letter not being shared with them by the President.Teixeira, in reading a part of the President’s correspondence to Mr. Granger, stated that, “I received that correspondence on April 12, 2013, at which time, the Office of the President was pressing for the resumption of budget talks with the parliamentary opposition and preparing for same. Importantly, I was made aware of the situation surrounding Guyana’s compliance to the CFATF obligations derived from the outcome of the CFATF/ICRG assessments. I was equally aware of the planned intervention in collaboration with local, regional and international stakeholders in organizing a workshop on the same matter on Wednesday, April 17.”The letter further stated that, “It is in that context that the omission took place during which I may have committed the imagined slight as your May 20, 2013 correspondence intimates. I can assure you that no such slight was ever intended as your participation was expected at the workshop where the status of Guyana’s situation was the key agenda item.”Teixeira said that while she appreciates that, “Mr. Granger may have felt some type of slight, it must be recognised that the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) encouraged the Head of State, and it was the president’s discretion, to invite who he wanted to, to a workshop where the issues surrounding the critical piece of legislation and recommendations by the oversight group of the CFATF, would be discussed.Presidential Adviser on Governance Gail TeixeiraShe noted, “The president in a generous way,Hydro Flask Sale Clearance http://www.hydroflasksaleclearance.com/, quickly responded to a letter that he received the same day and tried to reach Mr. Granger, and also submitted a copy of this letter, both electronically and ?hard copy. We have received no response and further attempts to reach Mr. Granger have been unsuccessful”.Ultimately, Ms. Teixeira, said, the possibility of meeting the internationally stipulated deadline for passing the critical piece of legislation is “very slim”.Initially tabled on April 22, the Parliamentary opposition voted however, to defer the bill after its reading in the National Assembly on May 7 to the Special Select Committee for consideration. That committee was expected to conclude its work by today (May 22).The Special Select Committee comprises government representatives Gail Teixeira, Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh and the AG. On the opposition side, representing the Alliance for Change is Khemraj Ramjattan, whilst A Partnership for National Unity is represented by Deborah Backer, Joseph Harmon, Basil Williams and Carl Greenidge. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global watchdog against financial crimes, will meet in Nicaragua from May 27-30 and will examine how Guyana and other countries in the Caribbean are meeting international obligations. If Guyana does not pass the amendments within the given timeframe (May 27), then it shall? be placed on a list with other delinquent countries, and would be visited with a regime of sanctions which will include restrictions in the manner that Guyana does business internationally especially involving wire transfers of funds. Once placed on that list, it takes an averageAPNU Leader David Grangerof approximately seven years to come off. (GINA)

City Magistrate Alex Moore remanded a man to prison yesterday after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.Devon Garraway, 24, of 317 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown denied that he had a .32 revolver in his possession along with 24 rounds of matching ammunition on September 6, at East Ruimveldt, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. His next court date will be on October 13,Soccer Jerseys From China http://www.soccerjerseyswholesale.us.com/, for reports.Prosecutor, Corporal Shawn Gonsalves, told the court that the defendant was arrested by the police during a sting operation. He added that a search was conducted on Garraway’s person and the illegal gun and ammo were found. The prosecutor objected to bail on the ground that no special reasons were provided to satisfy the court.Garraway, who was unrepresented by an attorney, explained to the court that the items did not belong to him. He added that he was sent by his roommate to uplift a package containing food stuff and clothes. Additionally, he claimed that he is innocent of the charge since he had no knowledge of what was concealed inside of the package. The defendant said that on the day in question, the police pounced on him and placed the allegation to him.

Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) continues to assist Hinterland communities affected by the current prolonged dry weather. The GWI Hinterland Team is currently conducting remedial works and other interventions in Central Lethem, Aishalton, and Achiwib, in Region Nine, and Kamwatta and Koko, in Region One.GWI CEO Dr. Richard Van West-Charles during a tour of several Hinterland Communities.According to Hinterland Manager, GWI, Osei Manifold, “Due to the prolonged dry season, the static water level of the wells in the communities we are currently monitoring, has decreased.”? The static water level is the distance from the land surface (or the measuring point) to the water in the well.“The current climatic conditions have significantly affected these wells. However, while the levels have decreased, the wells are still producing water, though at reduced levels”.In addition,Cheap Hockey Jerseys http://www.cheapadidasnhljerseys.us.com/, the well station serving the community of Aishalton is currently experiencing technical difficulties due to a defective control box which has caused the electrical pump, which supplies power to the station to malfunction. The well station at Achiwib is also experiencing challenges due to a damaged electrical pump.“The replacement parts necessary for these repairs have been delivered to Central Lethem,” stated Manifold, “and the GWI team will be travelling to each community by Friday,Cheap Jerseys From China http://www.cheapjerseysnflonline.us.com/, January 8 to assist the Regional Authorities with these urgent repairs”.The Hinterland Manager concluded that all repairs should be completed by Sunday, January 10.In addition, GWI has commenced a programme to provide the Hinterland communities of Kamwatta and Koko,Cheap Soccer Jerseys http://www.soccerjerseyswholesale.us.com/, Region 1 with improved access to potable water through the construction of new well stations and the installation of stand-pipes for both communities at a cost of over G$10 Million.Following a reconnaissance visit to both communities by the Hinterland Manager,Nike Air Max Wholesale Uk http://www.airmaxsaleukoutlet.com/, the company is prepared to commence the drilling of new well stations at Kamwatta and Koko, Region One by mid-month.According to Mr Maifold, “both communities have significant water supply challenges.? In fact, the residents of Koko depend on rain water harvesting for their water supply.? Hence, the construction of these new wells is vital to improving the standard of living in both hinterland communities”.In addition to the construction of the well stations, the programme will involve erecting overhead storage tanks capable of storing in excess of 1800 gallons of water for more efficient water service. The programme will also encompass the installation of stand-pipes at key locations which are easily accessible and convenient for residents to access the service within Kamwatta and Koko.“In excess of 400 residents will benefit from improved access to safe water upon completion of both wells,” stated Manifold,Cheap Adidas Shoes Wholesale http://www.cheapestadidasshoesaustralia.com/, in particular,Womens MLB Jerseys Online http://www.mlbgear.net/, residents of Koko will be relieved following the construction of the new well station since the community has no water supply system.“In the past, residents utilized hand dug wells, but due to the prolonged dry season this is no longer an option.? Every effort is being made to install the new systems in the swiftest manner possible.”Emphasis will be placed on schools and health facilities to ensure these institutions receive consistent water supply. The installation of the water supply systems at Kamwatta and Koko forms part of GWI’s overall Hinterland Water Supply Improvement Programme which has received an investment by the Government of Guyana in excess of G$130 Million for 2015.

Several months after construction…Many months have passed since Government constructed a multi-million dollar building that has been constructed at High and Princes Streets. Until now,Cheap Nike Shoes China http://www.cheapnikeshoesfromchina.us.com/, officials have failed to find a suitable use for this structure. The building, which now stands at the location where the old Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) headquarters was situated, was supposed to have housed the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. This Government building which is located at Princes and High Streets now serves no meaningful purposeHowever,Nike Air Max Scontate http://www.outletairmaxitalia.it/, there was a change of plans to accommodate the Ministry of Health after a tragic fire destroyed the Ministry’s building a few years ago, but it was later reported to have been used to facilitate other government departments. These plans never materialized and the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) reportedly agreed,Hydro Flask ?terf?rs?ljare http://www.hydroflasksverige.se/, last September, to take control of the building and accommodate some of its departments. This plan, like the others, has not been executed.According to a source, the GRA will no longer be utilizing this edifice,Alvin Kamara Jersey http://www.shopnfljerseys.us.com/Alvin-Kamara-New-Orleans-Saints/, but will now be relocating some of its departments to the CLICO building located on Camp Street. One businessman told Kaieteur News that the Tax Office was scheduled to move to the Princes and High Streets location, but because of a delay due to works being carried out on the structure,Discount Air Max 720 http://www.cheapairmax720sale.com/, the date was pushed back to January this year. The man continued to explain that since January,A.J. Klein Jersey http://www.shopnfljerseys.us.com/Aj-Klein-New-Orleans-Saints/, the building has been effectively abandoned, with no construction being carried out and no workmen even being seen on site. With the new plans of shifting the GRA departments to the CLICO building on Camp Street, one is left to wonder about the fate of this structure.

…says Development Goals are ‘wishes’Chairman of the Guyana Human Rights Association, Mike McCormack, has taken the position that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the United Nations Development Programme’s Caribbean Human Development Report, are mere wishes based on the approach taken to achieve the objectives. He said during the launch of the 2016 report that the development goals highlighted in the report are not goals,Yeezy Boost 350 Wholesale http://www.yeezy350wholesale.com/, since there is the lack of a clear cut plan to achieve them and this includes resource mobilization.“The SDGs have no such framework, no responsibility that somebody’s gonna have to answer to if they are not achieved. There are no identified resources, and there is no programme that would allow you to really say these are our goals. These are all sustainable development wishes.”McCormack went onto say, that the goals lack the normative obligation to implement them and does not deal with the politics.Guyana Human Rights Association Head, Mike McCormackThe Human Rights advocate argued that the development analysts studied the issues prevailing in society by looking backwards. He said, “They evaluate what the situation is now and its improvements by what it was in the 1990s.”He said that the Sustainable Development Goals aim to abolish poverty by 2030 but believes that this is not morally relevant from a Human Rights perspective to determine how much progress was made from the 1990s to present.“The question is looking forward, how much longer are we going to tolerate the levels of deprivation and abuse and exploitation that exist now?”McCormack said that from his point of view he finds it hard to accept the report. “Let’s for a moment imagine we were living in 1830 and we were preoccupied with slavery and we looked back to 1800, we could argue, things are improving.”He said that this analysis is unacceptable from a Human Rights perspective because the question in 1830s was “Can we abolish slavery at a tolerable cost?”According to him, the parallel analogy is whether the abolition of poverty now can be done at a tolerable cost. He said that there lacks political will to deliberately address these issues head on.The 17 goals are no poverty,Nike Air Max Norge http://www.airmaxoutletnorge.com/, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality,Cheap NFL Jerseys http://www.jerseysnflchina.us.com/, clean water and sanitation,Cheap NFL Jerseys http://www.cheapstitchedjerseys.us.com/, affordable clean energy,Cheap Shoes Wholesale China Free Shipping http://www.cheapshoesfromchina.us.com/, decent work and economic growth, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land,Michael Irvin Jersey http://www.cheapcollegejerseys.us/Miami-Hurricanes-Michael-Irvin-Jersey/, peace and justice and partnerships for the goals. The report which was launched a few days ago, gave an insight into the progress countries in the Latin America and Caribbean have made on various economic fronts. This includes GDP growth, vulnerable populations, poverty and employment. It sought to provide an update on the multidimensional progress of human resilience beyond income.
